Growers Delight by Dwight Young

Dwight Young is the proud creator of “Growers Delight Soil Activator”, now in its 5th year of production.  His enthusiasm for his product was very evident and he was pleased to announce that it has been OMRI certified organic and is officially listed as a speaker with the BC Council of Garden Clubs! After working with experts in horticulture and agriculture, he has developed a soil amendment that addresses MANY issues in the garden!

Dwight told us how his initial foray into soil amendments began… with his wife coming home with a trunkful of different fertilizers, each for different plants, and each with different directions for each!  He thought… there has to be a better way!

Investigations into these synthetic fertilizers made Dwight want to find more natural, organic choices.  He remembered how the vegetables and fruits on the farm of his youth were so much more flavourful than today’s grocery store purchases and that helped power his search into what plants REALLY need.

Growers Delight Soil Activator is based on a NPK of 4-2-2. The 100% organic custom blend contains a coarse grade of humic acid (a natural soil conditioner) which is mined here in Canada. Humic acid is derived from compost from a million years ago and because it has hardened, is actually mined similar to coal. Dwight explained that it has been sized to his specifications, and also enriched with calcium and trace minerals of copper, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, zinc, and cobalt.

Having the lower nitrogen (level 4) means you won’t have an overabundance of leaves. Using the 4-2-2 base, along with the slow release of the added ingredients, allows for improving germination and viability of seeds, stimulates beneficial microorganisms, and improves the long-term soil pH.

Dwight also explained that Chelates (a type of bonding material) act by helping macro and micro nutrients be available to the plant for a longer period of time.  This additionally results in “no burning of the root system” even with seedlings. Nutrients are slowly released into the soil, which also increases the microbial activity and improves the soil structure for better aeration and water movement. This encourages deeper root growth, which is especially effective on sandy soils.

Dwight explained that Humic acid acts like drains for your sink… it cleans the soil out.  It is 100% organic and totally safe for pets.  As a point of interest… put a little extra product on those pee spots from the dog… they will recuperate much faster!  Chafer beetles don’t like Growers Delight so it results in stronger turf!

Dwight’s slide show gave some wonderful testimonials, locally, and also in Williams Lake. Clients had sent in photos of great blooms, veggies, and shrubbery.

A powerful example was regarding a severely compromised Maple tree.  The neighbour watering it, in the owner’s absence over the summer, had used chlorinated pool water! It seemed destined to die, but with crossed fingers and ample application of Growers Delight, this tree rebounded!  What a great success story!

Growers Delight is a bonus for all sorts of vegetables.  Dwight’s home photos introduced many of us to Chayote, cultivated as a vegetable but technically a fruit!! Wow, that’s an interesting one! (Dwight says it’s a bit like a cucumber.)

His planting tip for garlic was to make a row, sprinkle GD (Growers Delight), plant the garlic bulbs, sprinkle some more GD and cover with soil.

You can also use it in your compost. Sprinkle GD in the pit, add your green waste, sprinkle some more on top, and cover.

GD is also good for indoor as well as outdoor plants. A small handful (tablespoon) every 4 or 5 months. Dwight even uses it for cut flowers instead of the packaged commercial additives.  GD perks the flowers up and make them last longer.

Sprinkle GD in a wide ring around the new root system of trees (not at the base of the trunk!)  Grass, fruit trees, indoor plants…all plants like GD but of course you have to monitor your plants to adjust the specific amount that suits them best!

QUESTIONS

Can you make it solvable to spray on plants?
Yes… you can dissolve it!

Where do you source the Humic acid?
On the West Coast, or Saskatchewan, depending on availability.

Do you have to add every year?
Yes, just sprinkle it on top and let the rain soak it in.
The only time we don’t apply it is when temperatures are in the minus!

Thank you so much, Dwight, for this wonderful alternative to “all those myriad of fertilizers”!  We are looking forward to seeing all the great results with our own plants!

Here is a bonus for you. 🤗😊Thanks from Dwight … and…. thanks TO Dwight from us!

Taking care of your fruit trees:

Step 1: before dressing up your fruit trees for winter, it’s always best to give them one last drink & food. Add approximately 300 grams of Growers Delight Soil Activator to each plant along with approximately 20-30 lbs of black soil. & roughly 5-10 lbs of leaf compost. (depending on size)

Step 2: using chicken wire mesh to build a foundation to hold the leafy material. Add the leaf & secure that it will hold thru out the winter.

Step 3: wrap with light plastic to hold in moisture & heat retention.

Step 4: go on a nice warm vacation🏝🏜 & let Mother Nature & Growers delight start next spring with a healthy base to grow incredible fruits.

Dwight Young Speaker Bio. (by Shelagh J.)

Nowadays Dwight lives in South Surrey with his wife Iris, where they have space to grow their own vegetables, and Iris’s beautiful flower gardens. But over the years they both noticed how depleted the soil had become. Then one Sunday afternoon Iris asked him for help unloading the car. To to his disappointment, in the trunk lay 5-6 large bags of all sorts of fertilizers and he thought “there MUST be a better way!” And so began the journey that has led to Dwight being the proud owner of Growers Delight, a family run business started in 2017.

Dwight and Iris try to teach their grandsons how important healthy soil is for their future, and get them involved as much as possible.
